Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Jalna-I, Maharashtra of Marathwada Sheti Sahayya Mandal (MSSM)’s organized 303rd Farmers monthly seminar on “Carbon Credit and Bamboo Cultivation” here today.
Krishi Vigyan Mandal (KVM) is an informal forum of volunteer farmers formed by KVK, Jalna-I in 1997, the members of which organize monthly farmers' seminar on 5th date of every month on meaningful and need based topics under the guidance of KVK.
The Chief Guest, Dr. Lakhan Singh, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Pune, appreciated KVK’s efforts and initiatives for bamboo cultivation, sericulture, IPM in cotton, food processing and value addition, goat farming etc. He urged the KVK to give further orientation and awareness on carbon credit trading along with whole process of registration and other conditions among farmers.
Dr. Harihar Kausadikar, Director Research, MCAER, Pune mentioned that carbon credit is an initiative at international level to reduce the greenhouse gases emission. He said one carbon credit is equal to one ton Carbon dioxide and the value of one carbon credit is 22 Euro (1786 Rs) in international market. Bamboo has the maximum potential of carbon credit generation where one acre bamboo can give 80 carbon credits of Rs. 60,000, he concluded.
Shri Arun E. Wandre, Director, Bamboo Society of India, Maharashtra Chapter, Kolhapur briefed about the Commercial Bamboo Cultivation focusing on important species of bamboo suitable for cultivation in Maharashtra and its use in bamboo industry. He mentioned that bamboo is an important remunerable crop for climate resilience which add maximum carbon credits and live for 40 years once planted. He added that there are eight species identified for Maharashtra with specific purpose of each variety.
Shri Sudam Salunke, Trustee, MSSM, Jalna in his chairman’s remarks acknowledged extended support and cooperation received from ICAR for successful implementation of KVK activities and appealed farmers to take benefit of KVM for their progress in agriculture.
More than 200 farmers were participated in the seminar across the district.
