ICAR-NBFGR Strengthens Skills and Livelihoods through Specialised Training Programmes

The Centre for Peninsular Aquatic Genetic Resources (PAGR), ICAR–National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Kochi, organised a series of specialised capacity building programmes aimed at enhancing skills, disseminating technologies, and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, highlighted that these initiatives are designed to build the capacities of students, researchers, and farming communities, thereby strengthening conservation efforts and ensuring the sustainable management of fish genetic resources.

Key programmes included:

•Captive Breeding and Larval Rearing of Indigenous Fishes (08–14 September 2025): A week-long training for 24 participants on advanced methodologies to support fish conservation and aquaculture development.

•Awareness and Technology Dissemination in Pichavaram, Tamil Nadu (19 September 2025): An outreach programme involving 100 participants, focusing on livelihood enhancement of the Irular community (Scheduled Tribe) through sustainable fisheries-based practices.

•Open-source Geospatial Tools in Fisheries Resource Management (15–20 September 2025): A hands-on training for 13 participants on the use of geospatial applications for resource mapping, monitoring, and management.
