Udlu village in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand, has emerged as a model of rural transformation through science-led agricultural interventions spearheaded by ICAR–Research Complex for Eastern Region – Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ramgarh. The initiative was supported by ICAR–Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute and ICAR–Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology.
Adopted in 2023 under the Scheduled Caste Sub-Plan (SCSP), the village—comprising nearly 600 families, about 60% from Scheduled Caste communities—previously depended on small landholdings, monocropping, and seasonal wage labour, with annual household incomes ranging between ₹40,000 and ₹60,000.
To celebrate these achievements, ICAR-RCER–KVK Ramgarh organized a Kisan Safalta Mahotsav on the theme “Khet Mein Vigyan, Sashakt Kisan” at Udlu village on 28 February 2026.
The programme was inaugurated by Shri Nirmal Mahto, MLA, Mandu, who appreciated the efforts of ICAR-RCER and KVK Ramgarh in strengthening rural livelihoods. He also inaugurated the Digital Knowledge Centre and Poultry & Goatry Unit.

Dr. Anup Das, Director, ICAR-RCER, Patna, congratulated the villagers and emphasized replicating such participatory models to enhance farmers’ income and contribute towards Viksit Bharat 2047.
Following a detailed baseline survey, KVK Ramgarh implemented an integrated and need-based development approach, including:
•Improved piggery, goatry, backyard poultry and duck farming
•Vegetable cultivation, nutri-gardens and fruit production with quality inputs
•Farm mechanization support (rotavators, power sprayers, electric pumps, weeders)
•Skill development, demonstrations, exposure visits and farmer–scientist interactions
A Village Digital Knowledge Centre was also established to facilitate access to government schemes such as Bharat-VISTAAR, PM-Kisan, PMKSY, and PM-KUSUM.
Within three years, Udlu village has recorded remarkable progress. Farm incomes have increased by 3–5 times, with average household incomes rising to ₹1.5–3.0 lakh annually. Women and rural youth have diversified into mushroom cultivation, tailoring and service-based enterprises, generating additional monthly income of ₹7,000–₹12,000 while improving household nutrition and year-round employment.
Shri Basant Kumar Ravi, who returned from Mumbai during COVID-19, adopted scientific pig farming with KVK support. Starting with three Jharsukh pigs, he now manages 26 pigs and piglets alongside vegetable cultivation, earning around ₹6 lakh annually. He was honoured with the Innovative Farmer Award by BAU, Ranchi.
Shri Pankaj Kumar Ravi, formerly a daily wage labourer, diversified into scientific pig farming on his 2.5-acre rainfed land. His annual income increased from below ₹50,000 in 2023 to over ₹3 lakh.
Smt. Sanju Devi adopted mushroom cultivation, kitchen gardening and tailoring, raising her annual income to about ₹2 lakh, with additional tailoring earnings of ₹7,000–₹12,000 per month.

Smt. Rubi Kumari, a graduate from a marginal farming family, established a home-based tailoring enterprise and supplies stitched garments to a city-based shop, earning ₹10,000–₹12,000 per month and inspiring other rural women.
Several similar success stories have positioned Udlu as a model village for integrated, science-based agri-transformation.
The event featured field visits, farmer–scientist interactions, ten exhibition stalls, and sharing of success stories by five farmers, including women entrepreneurs. More than 400 farmers, along with KVK personnel, state officials, NGOs and other stakeholders, participated in the programme.
Udlu village now stands as a shining example of how integrated scientific interventions can transform rural livelihoods from poverty to prosperity.
