ICAR-CCARI & KVK North Goa Organises Method Demonstration on Scientific Fodder Conservation through Silage Preparation

ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, North Goa, conducted a method demonstration on silage preparation as an entrepreneurship development program today in North Goa, today.

A hands-on demonstration on scientific silage preparation was conducted for dairy farmers, focusing on the complete process of silage making. Farmers were guided on the selection of maize fodder at the milky to dough stage, appropriate chaffing size, and the use of inner and outer liners. The demonstration also covered layer-wise filling of chaffed maize fodder with salt and silage culture, followed by proper compaction to ensure anaerobic conditions. Key aspects such as vacuum removal, airtight sealing, storage precautions, and scientific feeding practices for cattle and goats were explained to enhance livestock productivity. It was highlighted that silage serves as an effective alternative during the summer season when green fodder availability is limited in regions like Goa.

Farmers were further guided on improved agronomic practices for maize fodder cultivation to achieve higher yields and superior fodder quality for silage preparation. During the programme, a total of 2 tonnes of silage was successfully prepared.

The programme also emphasized the potential of silage making as a viable entrepreneurial activity, enabling efficient utilization of surplus fodder and ensuring year-round availability of nutritious feed for livestock. In view of the recurring shortage of green fodder during summer, the demonstration served as a practical model, encouraging farmers to adopt scientific fodder conservation practices.

A total of 15 farmers, including 14 men and 1 woman, actively participated in the programme and gained practical knowledge through the hands-on demonstration. The farmers expressed satisfaction with the programme and showed keen interest in adopting silage technology on a larger scale.
