ICAR–Indian Institute of Rapeseed-Mustard Research, Bharatpur, observed World Intellectual Property Day on 28 April 2026 by organizing a workshop on “Intellectual Property Rights in Agricultural Research and Management.”

In his inaugural address, Dr V. V. Singh, Director, ICAR-IIRMR, underscored the increasing significance of intellectual property rights (IPR) in agricultural research. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding scientific innovations through patents, trademarks, and copyrights to enhance their commercial potential and societal benefits.
An expert lecture titled “IPR in Agriculture: Transforming Innovation in India through Patent Protection” highlighted the critical role of patents in agricultural research. The speaker stressed the need for scientists to adopt patent-related safeguards from the early stages of research to ensure effective protection of innovations. The session also provided detailed insights into the patent filing process and its long-term advantages. During the outreach session, emphasis was placed on maintaining quality standards in agricultural products to strengthen market competitiveness and build consumer confidence.

The programme offered valuable perspectives on techno-legal challenges and strategic approaches for protecting intellectual assets in an increasingly dynamic innovation ecosystem. More than 35 participants, including scientists, technical personnel, and representatives from startups, actively participated in the discussions.
