ICAR-CIARI, Sri Vijaya Puram Organizes Workshop on Intellectual Property Management and Commercialization on World Intellectual Property Day 2026

ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Sri Vijaya Puram organized a workshop on the eve of World Intellectual Property Day 2026 today under the theme “IP and Sport: Ready, Set, Innovate!” at the institute.

Dr Praveen Malik, Chief Executive Officer, Agrinnovate India Limited, New Delhi, highlighted the importance of licensing and commercialization of technologies to ensure that innovations developed in laboratories effectively reach farmers. He emphasized that scientific advancements should be transferred to the farming community through strong partnerships with industries. Dr Malik also advised scientists to work collaboratively with peers in the same discipline as well as across other institutes. He assured that Agrinnovate India Limited would extend support in building industrial collaborations for successful technology commercialization.

Shri Krishna G. Thakur, Business Manager, Agrinnovate India Limited, New Delhi, delivered a presentation on “Essentials of Intellectual Property Management &Commercialisation,” where he elaborated on the concept and importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). He explained various aspects of IPR, including key conventions, treaties, and agreements governing intellectual property protection. He also outlined the way forward for successful commercialization, emphasizing the transition of innovations from laboratory research to market-ready technologies.

Earlier, Dr Jai Sunder, Director (Acting), ICAR-CIARI, presented a comprehensive overview of the status of island agriculture. He highlighted the unique agricultural challenges and opportunities in the island ecosystem. He showcased the various crop varieties and innovative technologies developed by the institute for the benefit of island farmers. He highlighted the patents, design registrations, breed registrations, copyrights, and trademarks secured by ICAR-CIARI over the years. He noted that these achievements reflect the institute’s commitment to innovation and scientific excellence. He also briefed the participants on the various technologies that have been successfully commercialized by the institute. He stressed the importance of technology transfer for wider adoption and farmer benefit. His presentation underscored ICAR-CIARI’s significant contributions to agricultural development and innovation in island regions.

The workshop was attended by around 30 scientists from various divisions of the institute.
