ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, North Goa, under the aegis of ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute, Goa organized an awareness campaign on Organic Nutrient Management for Sustainable Soil Health and Crop Productivity for agriculture trainees at Industrial Training Institute, Mapusa today.
The programme was conducted as part of the ongoing Intensive Awareness Campaign for Adoption of Science-Based Nutrient and Other Input Management, with the objective of promoting sustainable agricultural practices and creating awareness among rural youth and agriculture trainees about the importance of balanced and eco-friendly nutrient management.
Experts emphasized that organic nutrient management practices involve the use of farmyard manure, compost, vermicompost, green manures, crop residues, biofertilizers, liquid organic formulations, and other natural nutrient sources to improve soil fertility and plant growth. Goa’s soils, particularly lateritic and coastal soils, require regular addition of organic matter to enhance nutrient availability, moisture retention, and soil biological activity. The experts stressed that organic manures help restore soil health, sustain long-term productivity, and reduce dependence on costly chemical fertilizers.

Therefore, organic nutrient management is highly essential for paddy fields, coconut gardens, cashew plantations, vegetable cultivation, spice crops, and horticultural systems in Goan agriculture, while also helping to conserve the fragile ecosystem. Farmers in Goa are encouraged to adopt these practices through recycling farm waste, preparing compost, using biofertilizers, and integrating organic inputs with scientific recommendations for improved soil health and higher profitability.
The experts also highlighted the benefits of adopting organic nutrient management practices in the context of climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable farming systems.
The programme witnessed active participation from nineteen agriculture trainees, who showed keen interest in learning about sustainable nutrient management approaches and their practical applications in farming.
