18–20 May 2026, Bengaluru
ICAR–National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources, Bengaluru organised a three-day In-House Training Programme on “Insect Genome Editing: Principles and Hands-on Applications of CRISPR/Cas Systems” from 18–20 May 2026. The programme aimed to strengthen institutional capacity and technical expertise in advanced insect genome editing technologies.
The training programme was conceptualised based on the international exposure and training received under the ICAR Genome Editing Project, which significantly contributed to the development of the practical framework and course content. The programme provided participants with both theoretical understanding and hands-on exposure to insect genome editing workflows.

The sessions covered a wide range of topics including RNA interference (RNAi), principles of CRISPR/Cas systems, and CRISPR-based diagnostics. Extensive practical sessions were conducted on target gene selection, ortholog identification, guide RNA design using computational tools, embryo alignment, pre-blastoderm embryo microinjection, PCR amplification, gel electrophoresis, and sequencing data interpretation.
An invited lecture on “Gene Editing and Genetic Pest Management” was also delivered during the programme, highlighting the applications of genome editing technologies and genetic approaches for sustainable insect pest management.

Dr T. Venkatesan, Director (Acting), ICAR–NBAIR, interacted with the participants and underscored the importance of strengthening institutional expertise in advanced genome editing technologies for future insect research and sustainable pest management. He encouraged the participants to effectively utilise the knowledge and practical skills gained during the training programme in their respective research areas and to further strengthen collaborative research initiatives in molecular entomology and functional genomics.
A total of 18 participants, including scientists, students, and project staff from ICAR–NBAIR, participated in the programme. The training successfully enhanced awareness and strengthened practical competencies in insect genome editing technologies among the participants.
