ICAR-NRCO Orchid Dry Flower Art Receives International Recognition

Orchid dry flower frames and resin-based orchid products developed by ICAR–National Research Centre for Orchids, Pakyong, Sikkim, received international recognition during the visit of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to Norway. The orchid dry flower frames and orchid paperweights presented by the Prime Minister to the Prime Minister of Norway, Mr. Jonas Gahr Støre, were sourced from ICAR-NRCO.

During the Prime Minister’s visit to Sikkim, the orchid dry flower frames and resin products prepared using real orchid flowers drew special attention and appreciation from the Prime Minister. Subsequently, as desired by the Chief Minister of Sikkim, these products were procured from ICAR-NRCO through the office of the Chief Secretary of Sikkim. In response, the Centre promptly prepared additional orchid-based products, which were later forwarded to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) through the Chief Secretary’s office, Government of Sikkim.

The products were developed using technologies standardised by ICAR-NRCO and naturally preserved orchid flowers and ferns collected from the Centre in Sikkim, showcasing the rich orchid diversity and natural beauty of the Himalayan region.

ICAR-NRCO has been actively engaged in developing orchid-based value-added products, including dry flower frames, resin art products, orchid souvenirs, orchid jewellery, and flower preservation technologies. These initiatives are aimed at promoting the sustainable utilisation of orchid resources while creating additional livelihood opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs.

The Centre is also conducting training programmes for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), self-help groups (SHGs), women entrepreneurs, orchid growers, and rural youth on dry flower technology and orchid value addition for entrepreneurship development and livelihood enhancement.

The international appreciation received for these products is a matter of great pride for both the institute and the state of Sikkim. Such recognition by the Prime Minister is expected to further promote orchid conservation, value addition, entrepreneurship, and awareness about the rich floral wealth of the North Eastern Himalayan region.
