DAESI Course Brings a New Beginning for an Agri-Input Dealer

Growing up in Sisauna village of Sitarganj in Uttarakhand's Udham Singh Nagar district, Mr. Manoj Singh Rana always shared a close bond with agriculture. After completing his graduation, instead of pursuing a conventional job, he chose to work alongside his father on the family farm. What began as an effort to support his family gradually became a journey of learning. Through hands-on experience, he gained practical knowledge of crop cultivation and developed a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by farmers in the region.

The area is known for cultivating rice, wheat, sugarcane, mustard, and vegetable pea. However, recurring pest and disease outbreaks had led to excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, resulting in deteriorating soil health and declining crop productivity. Witnessing these challenges firsthand inspired him to contribute beyond his own farm. He realized that farmers needed not only agricultural inputs but also reliable scientific guidance to use them effectively.

Driven by this vision, he established Rana Khad Bhandar in Baruabag, Sisauna, during 2013–14 to supply fertilizers and pesticides to local farmers. Although the business was well received, he soon recognized a major gap in his own knowledge. Farmers frequently sought advice on appropriate fertilizer doses, pesticide application, and crop management practices—questions for which he often had no scientific answers. Determined to bridge this gap, he began consulting agricultural officers, progressive farmers, and trained professionals to improve his understanding.

A turning point came when he learned about the Diploma in Agricultural Extension Services for Input Dealers (DAESI). Recognizing it as an opportunity to strengthen his technical knowledge, he enrolled in the 2021–22 batch at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), Pantnagar. The 48-week programme, designed specifically for agri-input dealers, transformed his perspective on agriculture from being product-oriented to knowledge-driven.

Through the DAESI programme, he gained scientific understanding of soil health management, irrigation techniques, bio-inoculants, seed treatment, integrated nutrient management, biological control of pests and diseases, and regulatory aspects such as the Seed Act and Fertilizer Control Order. The training equipped him with the confidence to guide farmers with evidence-based recommendations rather than simply selling agricultural products.

Today, his role has evolved from that of an input dealer to a trusted para-extension professional. Instead of promoting indiscriminate use of agrochemicals, he now advocates balanced nutrient management, minimal pesticide use, and greater adoption of bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides. Every recommendation is accompanied by scientific explanations, enabling farmers to make informed decisions for sustainable crop production.

His shop has also been transformed into a local knowledge hub. He established an e-Corner where farmers can access agricultural literature and extension materials obtained from GBPUAT, Pantnagar. Information on newly released agricultural technologies is prominently displayed, encouraging farmers to stay updated with the latest scientific advancements. Farmers visiting the outlet not only purchase inputs but also leave with valuable technical knowledge, making the establishment an important centre for agricultural learning in the area.

The impact of this transformation is clearly reflected in his business performance. Demand for eco-friendly agricultural inputs has increased steadily, with sales of Bio DAP rising from 200 to 300 bags, Bio Herbosafe from 100 to 130 bags, Herbal Power from 50 to 65 bags, and Veg More from 20 to 30 bags. The number of customers has grown from 100 to 130, average monthly sales have increased from ₹3 lakh to ₹4 lakh, and net monthly profit has risen significantly from ₹0.35 lakh to ₹0.62 lakh.

He credits the DAESI programme, developed by MANAGE and implemented through GBPUAT, Pantnagar, for reshaping his career and enabling him to serve farming communities more effectively. The programme not only strengthened his technical competence but also empowered him to bridge the gap between agricultural research and farmers by sharing scientific knowledge and conveying farmers' field-level challenges to experts.

The journey of Mr. Manoj Singh Rana demonstrates how capacity building through structured training can transform an agri-input dealer into a knowledgeable extension partner. His story illustrates that when scientific knowledge is combined with a genuine commitment to farmers, it creates lasting benefits for rural livelihoods, sustainable agriculture, and the farming community as a whole.
