As part of the nation-wide Khet Bachao Abhiyan, ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Kochi conducted a Brainstorming Workshop and an Interface Programme connecting scientists with farmers, FPOs, SHGs, Panchayat representatives and input dealers today. The event was aimed at promoting balanced fertilizer use and improving soil health through community awareness.
The programme was inaugurated by Shri K.G. Radhakrishnan, President of Ernakulam District Panchayat. Emphasising the importance of restoring soil fertility, the District Panchayat President urged stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices, including soil test-based fertiliser application, integrated nutrient management and greater use of organic manures alongside chemical fertilisers.

In an effort to make farming profitable, Mr. Radhakrishnan suggested integrated farming systems aligned with market demand, saying it would be more sustainable and profitable than conventional monocropping practices.
Dr Grinson George, Director, ICAR-CMFRI presided over the function. The workshop called for promoting balanced fertilizer application to ensure soil conservation through sustainable farming practices. It also featured modern urban farming techniques suitable for limited spaces, including rooftop gardening, vertical farming, nutrition gardens, microgreens, soilless cultivation, aquaponics and precision farming.

Experts also shared insights on Black Soldier Fly (BSF)-based organic fertilizers and practical solutions for improving soil health. The experts led technical sessions followed by interactions. Panchayat representatives, farmer producer organisations, self-help groups and farmers attended the workshop.
