The newly constructed Administrative Building of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nellore-II (Periyavaram) under Dr Y.S.R. Horticultural University was inaugurated today by Dr Rajbir Singh, Deputy Director General (Agricultural Extension), ICAR. The building, constructed with financial assistance of ₹207 lakh from ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone X, Hyderabad, will strengthen the KVK’s administrative and extension activities.
The program was attended by Dr K. Dhanumjaya Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Dr YSRHU; Dr Shaik N. Meera, Director, ICAR–ATARI, Zone X, Hyderabad; Dr P.V. Satyanarayana, Vice-Chancellor, ANGRAU; and Dr J.V. Ramana, Vice-Chancellor, SVVU, along with university officers, officials, KVK scientists and farmers.
An awareness program on “El Niño Effect on Horticultural Crops” was also organized to sensitize farmers to climate-related challenges. The dignitaries inaugurated a horticultural exhibition showcasing varieties of acid lime, pummelo, sweet orange, banana and papaya, along with flower-regulation techniques in acid lime. They also interacted with KVK-trained entrepreneurs displaying millet- and moringa-based value-added products and reviewed the IIRR-developed soil-testing kit and natural farming practices promoted by the KVK.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Rajbir Singh described the occasion as a historic milestone for KVK Peri avaram. He emphasized coordinated action under the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan and Khet Bachao Abhiyan, guided by the spirit of “One Country, One Agriculture and One Team.” He also highlighted the importance of single-window technology delivery, wider village outreach, skill development of rural youth and agricultural entrepreneurship.
Dr Shaik N. Meera urged the KVK to strengthen need-based training programs, demonstrations, technical advisories and extension activities. He stated that the new building would facilitate the efficient implementation and management of KVK programs and informed the gathering about ICAR’s plan to establish 130 new KVKs across the country.
Dr P.V. Satyanarayana emphasized the crucial role of KVKs in linking universities with farmers and facilitating the transfer of technologies in agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry and allied sectors. Dr. J.V. Ramana stressed the need to encourage rural youth to pursue agriculture and allied enterprises, including dairy farming and sheep and goat rearing, as sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Dr Ch. Ruth, Director, Extension, Dr YSRHU, presented the achievements of KVK Periyavaram and acknowledged the financial support extended by ICAR–ATARI. On the occasion, the dignitaries released the publication titled “A Compendium of Technological Interventions: Success Stories of Dr. YSRHU–KVK, Periyavaram.”
