Scientist–Farmer Interaction Programme Organised at Tapoiming Village, Car Nicobar

ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nicobar, in collaboration with UTATMA, organised a Scientist–Farmer Interaction Programme at the Community Hall, Tapoiming Village, Car Nicobar, today. The programme brought together farmers, KVK scientists, village representatives and officials from various line departments to discuss agricultural and allied-sector concerns and identify suitable, location-specific solutions.

The programme was graced by Shri Lawrence Mathew, First Captain, Tapoiming Village, as the Chief Guest, along with Shri Simon William, Second Captain, and representatives from the Departments of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, and Environment & Forests.

Welcoming the participants, the importance of regular scientist–farmer interactions in understanding field-level challenges and providing farmers with appropriate technical guidance was emphasised. Such platforms enable farmers to directly interact with experts, clarify their queries, and learn about improved technologies and practices for enhancing productivity, efficient resource use, and livelihoods.

The farmers were briefed on improved agricultural practices and various departmental schemes, programmes, and support services. A detailed session was also conducted on scientific pig production and health management, highlighting the importance of hygiene and sanitation in pig sheds, balanced nutrition, clean drinking water, timely vaccination and deworming, regular health monitoring, and early veterinary intervention for disease prevention and improved animal productivity.

The importance of forest conservation, sustainable utilisation of natural resources, and adoption of environment-friendly practices suited to the local farming context was also highlighted.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Lawrence Mathew, First Captain, Tapoiming Village, appreciated the initiative of ICAR-KVK, Nicobar and UTATMA and emphasised the need for continued scientific guidance and coordination among farmers, village representatives, KVK scientists and government departments for strengthening agriculture and allied activities in the village.

The programme was organised under the overall guidance of Dr Jai Sunder, Director, ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute, Sri Vijaya Puram.
