Shri Jatindra Nath Swain, I.A.S., Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying visited the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai and Madras Research Centre of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute to interact with the Scientists on the research efforts need for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in the country today.

Shri Swain appreciated the research outputs of the ICAR-CIBA and ICAR-CMFRI aimed towards enhancing the productivity of the aquaculture and sustainability of the marine fisheries, respectively. He also urged for learning from Japanese Fishermen, especially, on the management of coastal resources through the effective implementation of the various regulation measures. The Government of India’s plan of a major Scheme for establishing the Finfish Hatcheries and Cage Aquaculture Units through the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) Mode was also underlined by Shri Swain.

Dr. V. Kripa, Member Secretary, Coastal Aquaculture Authority, Government of India, Chennai underlined the importance of minimizing the adoption gaps in the aquaculture technology through the technology refinement and efficient extension.
Dr. K.P. Jithendran, Director, ICAR-CIBA, Chennai outlined the Institute’s R&D Programmes and the achievements made in the last 5 Years.
Dr. R. Narayanakumar, Principal Scientist & Scientist-in-Charge, ICAR-CMFRI’s Madras Research Centre highlighted the ICAR-CMFRI’s major research achievements in the fishery resource conservation, responsible fisheries, marine cage-culture, capacity development and livelihood development of the marine fishers.
Dr. Akshaya Panigrahi, Principal Scientist & Principal Investigator, P. indicus Breeding Project briefed about the progress made in the Project.
