Parthenium Awarness Week

Parthenium hysterophorus is known by different names in different parts of the country, the ill effects of which have been seen mainly in the form of reduction in crop production and diseases like eczema, asthma, and allergies etc. in humans.

To apprise the farmers about the harmful effects of the Parthenium and its management, various ICAR Institutes pan India organized the “Parthenium Awareness Week” from 16th to 22nd August, 2021.

ICAR-Central Research Institute of Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad

On 19th August 2022, Dr. V. K. Singh, Director, ICAR-CRIDA apprised about the importance of celebrating the Parthenium week. He also highlighted the harmful effects of Parthenium like skin allergy (dermatitis), high fever and asthma in human beings and stressed the need to manage this weed an integrated mode i.e through mechanical, cultural and biocontrol methods. Parthenium besides hampering crop production becoming nuisance in non-cropped areas like residential areas, parks, road sides, railway tracks, he emphasized.

Scientists, staff and RAWEP students participated in uprooting of Parthenium plants in and around the CRIDA main campus and helped in making it Parthenium free campus

KVK - Hayathnagar Research Farm

Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Ranga Reddy District, of ICAR-CRIDA conducted Parthenium awareness programme on 19th August 2022 at KVK, Hayathnagar Research Farm.

A wide range of activities were conducted to spread awareness among staff members at KVK and RAWE students.

Staff of KVK along with RAWE students actively participated and removed Parthenium from the fruit crop plantations.

Regional Station Minicoy, Lakshadweep of ICAR- CIARI

Regional Station, Minicoy of ICAR-CIARI Port Blair, conducted “Parthenium awareness week” & sensitization on its integrated management for the school students and tribal farmers of Minicoy from 16th to 22nd August2022.

On 20th August 2022, the Chief Guest, Mr. Ibrahim Manikfan L.G., District Panchayat Representative, Lakshadweep Islands expressed his happiness on new initiative of ICAR-CIARI Regional Station, Minicoy. He also briefed about the harmful effect of Parthenium to human and other animals & its impact on soil productivity and biodiversity.

The scientific team interacted with the school students and teachers and highlighted on integrated management of Parthenium and its eradication by uprooting, biological control and composting.

An on station demonstration was also carried out on composting of Parthenium in participatory mode.

The students and teachers were also exposed to farm and other technologies of ICAR-CIARI, RS Minicoy.

A total of 25 students and 4 teachers participated the program.

The scientific team visited Bada, Aoumagu, Boduathiri, New Boduathiri, Rammedu, Sadivalu, Aloodi, Funhilol, Kudehi, Fallessery , Kendiparty and South Pandaram and conducted awareness on harmful effects of Parthenium and its management.

More than 75 participant participated in the event.

In this awareness week program, a programme was organized at ICAR-Indian Institute of Soybean Research, Indore, in which the participants were apprised about the problems caused by Parthenium hysterophorus. The measures to control the grass were discussed.  During rainy season, the grass should be uprooted before flowering, composted, to control its spread growing plants like marigold around the house and in fields can also be taken up. In addition to this, the use of herbicide (chemicals glyphosate and metribuzin) before flowering in uncultivated areas was also advised.
