Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General (ICAR) visited the Central Horticultural Experiment Station (CHES), ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bhubaneswar today.
During his visit to the experimental blocks of the Station, Dr. Mohapatra took onsite appraisal of the major field experiments pertaining to the various horticultural crops. The Director General interacted with the scientists about their research, extension and development activities.
Dr. Mohapatra took a note of the new research works being carried out at the Station viz., development of mango based cropping system with pine apple and dragon fruit, vegetable grafting in solanaceous crops like capsicum, tomato and brinjal to counter biotic and abiotic stresses, germplasm collection, etc.
The Director General emphasized on widening the scope of all the research / analytical works being currently held at the Station with help of nearby ICAR organizations. He urged to explore the commercial viability of cultivation of dragon fruit for the farming community’s benefit, skill development of entrepreneurs in the regions for the development of planting material of grafted vegetables, and other fruit and vegetable crops. He also opined to take the determined efforts for taking the horticultural technologies to the end-users for wider adoption.
The Directors of ICAR-NRRI; ICAR-IIWM; ICAR-CIFA; ICAR-CIWA and Head, ICAR-Regional Centre, ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Bhubaneswar accompanied the Director General during the field visit and provided their scientific inputs during the interactive sessions.
