The ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology, Mumbai, Maharashtra celebrated the “7th National Handloom Day” today.
In her welcome address, Dr. Sujata Saxena, Director, ICAR-CIRCOT, Mumbai outlined about the various types of handloom fabrics from the different parts of the country that are a part of the nation’s glorious cultural heritage and an important source of livelihood for people in the country. She stressed on the need for providing the weavers & artisans in the sector with the modern scientific technologies and marketing support to enable them compete in domestic and international markets. This will help to make the rich traditional culture flourish and prosper.


Dr. (Ms.) Manjula Jagatramka, Dean (Textiles), Institute of Heritage Textiles, Shri Jagdishprasad Jhabarmal Tibrewala University, Rajasthan and Veteran Textile Expert & Social Entrepreneur apprised about the handloom sector. She also shared her Entrepreneurial journey in setting-up of Vaitarna - A platform working towards the economic empowerment of under-privileged women by organizing the various training activities at the grass-root level and showcasing the handlooms & handicraft products made by them.
An Exhibition-cum-Sale of Khadi & Handloom Products in the Institute premises through the stalls of Co-optex and Khadi & Village Industries Commission, Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government of India was also organized during the occasion.
More than 100 participants including Scientists, Textile Faculty Members & Students from the Textile Institutions, NGOs and other Stakeholders participated in the event.
The event was organized as a part of the “Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav” to commemorate 75 Years of India’s Independence.
