DWSR Organized 2nd National Training Programme on Weed Management

dwsrnews-0129012014The Directorate of Weed Science Research organized a ten-day national training programme on ‘Advances in Weed Management’ during 14th–23rd January 2014.
In his inaugural address, Dr. P.K. Singh, Principal Scientist and Course Director briefed about the content of the programme. Welcoming participants and guests, Dr. A.R. Sharma, Director, DWSR focused on the importance and purpose of the training. He said the training will help scientists to improve their research programmes and extension activities relating to weed management.

Dr. V.S. Tomar, Vice Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh and the chief guest of the inaugural function explained the need of advanced knowledge of weed management for making agriculture a profitable venture. He opined that strong endeavor is required to pursue research work on weed management keeping in view the conservation agriculture, plastic mulching, climate change, bio-control agents, system management and cloning of genes.

In technical sessions, 33 lectures covering cultural, mechanical, biological, chemical and integrated weed management were delivered by the scientists/experts from the DWSR and other institutions. Total nine practical sessions were conducted covering important aspects of weed management techniques, viz., weed identification, spraying techniques, mechanical weeding tools, climate change, weed utilization, bio-control agents, herbicide residue analysis, HRCs, conservation agriculture. Participants visited OFR trials being conducted by DWSR at different villages.

Dr. C.B. Singh, former Dean and Director Extension, JNKVV chaired the closing ceremony on January 23, 2014.
Thirty scientists from different ICAR institutes and Agricultural Universities participated in the session.
