Shri Jatindra Nath Swain, I.A.S., Secretary (Fisheries), Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India visited the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Veraval Research Centre, Gujarat here today.

During his visit to the different Laboratories and Demonstration Facilities established at the Centre, the Secretary was apprised about the various technologies and the ongoing research and development programmes of the Centre. Impressed with the Centre’s R&D achievements, he urged the Scientists for focusing more on the sector-specific issues and location-based problems of the stakeholders, while formulating a Research Project. He also interacted with the Stakeholders of ICAR-CIFT for assessing the status of the fisheries sector in Gujarat Coast in the context of national scenario.
Shri Swain also handed-over some promising technological tools developed by the Institute namely - “Refrigerated Fish Vending Kiosk” to Shri Bhimrao Matsayadyog Sakhari Mandali, a Society run by the Scheduled Caste Community and “Slotted Otter Board” to Shri Prabhudas, a local Fisherman.
Dr. J. Balaji, I.A.S., Joint Secretary (Marine Fisheries), Government of India applauded the Institute’s contributions reflecting a visible impact in the fisheries sector.
Interacting with the Stakeholders, Dr. L.N. Murthy, Senior Executive Director, National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad underlined the various Schemes of the NFDB urged for any new initiatives related to the fish processing, seaweed-based product development and fish culture.
The Secretary was accompanied by Shri Nitin Sangwan, Commissioner of Fisheries, Government of Gujarat along with the other Senior Officials of State Fisheries Department of Gujarat and Scientists of the ICAR-CIFT Centre at Veraval.
Earlier, Dr. Ashish Kumar Jha, SIC, ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Veraval Research Centre, Gujarat welcomed the dignitaries.
The visit was planned during the Launching Ceremony of the “Sagar Parikrama” for marking the gratitude to the Seas and Saluting the Freedom Fighters, Sailors and Fishers as a part of “Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav” to celebrate 75 Years of India’s Independence.
